The Department of basic education has announced the phasing in of the reopening of schools. Only learners of grade 7 and 12 will be going back on 1 June 2020.
Until then the government has put measures in place to ensure that the learners, schools and all staff returning will be safe upon reopening.
In terms of hygiene:
*Buses/vehicles transporting learners will have to follow strict guidelines
*Schools have either placed orders or have purchased the basic hygiene and sanitation package
(special schools will have their assistive devices sanitized)
In terms of readiness:
*Teachers going back to school will be orientated by provincial and district officials when schools commence
*Learners will be orientated by their teachers
The Learners, teachers and non-teaching staff will be screened and tested. As it stands psycosocial support for learners and staff is made available this will ease the anxiety of those going back to schools.
It has been announced that exams will be written in November/December 2020
